Living Through Extreme Heat

In this short film, Rani Bhavane shares her experience living through extreme heat in Pune, India.

For years, her single-room home became nearly unlivable during the summer. By late morning, the air inside turned stifling. The fan only moved hot air, and even at night, sleep was difficult.

“From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., I couldn’t stay inside,” she recalls.

In 2024, MEER’s field team installed a reflective rooftop as part of a cooling pilot. Within days, the conditions inside her home began to change. The air felt cooler, and the space became more livable. Even her fan could circulate air more effectively.

MEER’s surface-based cooling approach has been shown to reduce indoor temperatures by around 5–7°C, helping provide immediate relief in heat-exposed homes.

Today, Rani describes a simple but meaningful shift: “Before, my house was like a box of fire. Now, it feels like home again.”

This is what climate adaptation looks like at the household level.
