Global South

Global South is a shorthand for the regions that face the sharpest climate impacts while contributing the least to global emissions. MEER prioritises partnerships in these regions.

Scientific detail

The term 'Global South' groups countries by structural position in the global economy rather than geography alone, capturing overlapping patterns of income, historical emissions and climate vulnerability. It is used in climate-justice discourse (including IPCC AR6 WG II) to highlight asymmetric exposure to heat, water and food insecurity, and to frame equity-centered adaptation priorities.
