# MEER — Mirrors for Earth's Energy Rebalancing > MEER is an independent nonprofit research organization developing passive > surface cooling — reflective roofs, engineered canopies and passive daytime > radiative cooling (PDRC) materials — that protects communities from extreme > heat and contributes to rebalancing Earth's energy budget. MEER combines climate science, materials research and community-based field deployments across Sierra Leone, India, Tanzania, California and China. Our work focuses on the physics of how sunlight is reflected, absorbed and re-radiated at the Earth's surface, and on translating that science into low-cost, low-energy cooling that reaches the people most exposed to heat. Key topics we publish on: passive cooling, passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC), surface albedo, cool roofs, reflective canopies, urban heat islands, heat stress and health, climate adaptation, climate resilience, and Earth's energy imbalance. ## Core pages - [Home](/): Overview of MEER, mission, technologies and projects. - [How it works](/how-it-works): Surface Radiative Thermal Management (SRTM) explained. - [Climate context](/climate): Why extreme heat is intensifying and what surface cooling can do. - [FAQs](/faqs): Deep knowledge base on cooling, radiative physics, albedo, urban heat and health. - [About MEER](/about): Independent nonprofit science-based research organization. ## Science & research - [The science](/science): Research overview and methods. - [Publications](/publications): Peer-reviewed research and technical notes. - [Publications](/publications): Full paper archive. - [Understanding albedo](/understanding-albedo): How surface reflectivity affects Earth's temperature. - [Energy balance](/energy-balance): Earth's energy imbalance and radiative forcing. - [Radiative cooling](/radiative-cooling): The 8–13 µm atmospheric window and passive cooling to space. - [Surface reflection](/surface-reflection): Solar reflectance across the full spectrum. - [Materials](/materials): PDRC materials and reflective coatings. - [Measurement](/measurement): How MEER measures cooling performance. - [Environmental sensors](/environmental-sensors): Field instrumentation and data collection. ## Applications - [Technologies](/technologies): Reflective roofs, canopies and water cooling systems. - [Urban cooling](/urban-cooling): Reducing urban heat island effects. - [Agriculture](/agriculture): Protecting crops, soils and livestock from heat. - [Water resources](/water-resources): Reducing evaporation from reservoirs. - [Cool your roof](/cool-your-roof): Practical guidance on reflective roofing. - [Cooling ROI](/cooling-roi): Economic and health benefits of surface cooling. - [HeatLens](/heatlens): Heat-risk data and location intelligence. ## Projects & impact - [Projects](/projects): Global project sites and field deployments. - [Community stories](/community-stories): News and stories from MEER's work. - [Human stories](/human-stories): First-person accounts from communities MEER serves. ## Organization - [Team](/team): Scientists, engineers and community leads. - [Partners](/partners): Academic and civil-society partners. - [Funding](/funding): How MEER is funded and how independence is protected. - [Ethics & integrity](/ethics-integrity): Governance and research ethics. - [Careers](/careers): Roles at MEER. - [Contact](/contact): Press and general enquiries — press@meer.org, info@meer.org. ## Optional - [News](/news): Latest updates. - [Newsletters](/newsletters): Archive of MEER newsletters. - [MEERTalks](/meertalks): Recorded conversations with climate scientists and practitioners. - [Podcasts](/podcasts): MEER on external podcasts. - [Videos](/videos): Video library. - [Photo gallery](/photo-gallery): Field photographs from project sites. - [Press](/press): Media resources and downloads. - [Resources](/resources): Additional reading and downloads.
