Atlantic Ocean Primary Productivity

from NASA (SeaWIFS)
Above is a diagram of the chlorophyll (approximating phytoplankton biomass ) detected by a NASA satellite (SeaWIFS project), and composited over several years. The higher concentration over the continental shelves can be clearly seen as the bright red areas. The centers of the large north and south Atlantic mid-ocean gyres can be seen as the regions of low productivity (purple), where low concentrations of nutrients result in a very low standing crop of plankton .
