The garibaldi is one of the few damselfish (order Perciformes, family Pomacentridae) that lives
in cooler waters.
It ranges from Magdalena Bay (on the Pacific coast of Baja California) to Monterey Bay in
central California, but is much more common south of Point Conception than it is in northern California.
Garibaldi are a bright golden-orange color as adults, the young are slightly more reddish in color and have bright
blue spots. Adults reach approximately 35 cm. in length, and are generally found in the upper
30 meters of the water column.
The family Pomacentridae has a total of about 28 genera and 315 species worldwide.
Garibaldi are in the subfamily Pomacentrinae, which has a total of 21 genera and 199 species
worldwide.
